Sussex Golf Captains

Wiltshire v Sussex

Having arrived in Wiltshire a day early, many of the players settled into the bar the night. We weren't sure if this was the best way to prepare for today’s battle. Judging by the photo's sent back, probably not. Anyway, enjoy.

Match 1

Richard Jays and Phil Manser v Kevin and David

We started well going four up after eight (It can be difficult to write a match report when you coast to an easy victory. Ed). Then David started the back nine with a net 1 (That’s ok, you were four holes up at this stage. Ed). Kevin came in on the back nine, so, sad to say we lost (Hey! Wait a minute, what? You lost? Ed.) Lost 1 Down.

Match 2

Phil Williamson and Ian “Harry” Potter v opponents names hidden under GDPR

We were up against it from the start: 4 down after 10, but we fought back well going All Square with two to play. “Harry’ who had played really well, had a shot on 17, and missed a short putt so we went one down and that is how it finished. Very competitive match. Lost 1 Down.

Match 3

Mickey Grimes and John Luke v Bert and Ernie

Started well, with two halves. Then we both hit the water on three. Fater that, we played like a couple of muppets and the floodgates opened. Bert and Ernie were four up at the turn (we did win one hole!  (Oh, well done you! Ed)). They opened the back nine with three 3’s to hand us a dog licence. Woof woof. Lost 7&6

Match 4

Mitch Clark and Keith Hayward v David and Tony

Great match against David and Tony. We dovetailed brilliantly. Mitch drove the ball great. In the end were delighted to win. Won 3&2

Match 5

Niall Addison and Richard Bevan v Gary (Partners name redacted for tax purposes)

First time we have ever started on the 28th hole. Great hosts who allowed us to start off with a three-hole lead before Gary turned it on, chipping in and holing everything. Fortunately, we managed to use all of our very generous handicaps to squeeze out a win. Won 1 up.

Match 6

Des 'Multiball' Malcolm and Harold ‘Ronseal’ Knight v (Opponents names redacted to spare them further embarrassment)

It was like playing at Dale Hill. Harold was a positive light all day, he chipped, putted and drove like a pro. Our opponents were generous, providing us with very helpful advice about the course, Des was brilliant, not managing to lose a ball. Won 1 up

Match 7

Bev Legg and Ken Penfold v Phil and Andrew

Brilliant day, playing against Phil and Andrew. It was a very competitive and friendly game with enjoyable company. Match ended in a draw, a fair result given how well everyone played. All Square.

Match 8

Andy Lamb and Andy Plowright v John and Ian

Good game with John and Ian, who were very good hosts. They were generous over the first few holes before tightening the game up over the front nine. We were winning at the turn, thanks to our good short game and excellent putting. We enjoyed the variety of the two nines but we didn’t get to see much of the back nine. Won 7&6

Result Sussex 4.5 – Wiltshire 3.5

That’s a good start, kicking off with an away win. Well to Andy and Pandy, winning the match with an emphatic win (Nice to see Andy Lamb back to form after being so soundlt beaten by his brother. Ed). The team are in good sprits, camaraderie is high and they are looking forward to moving on to Somerset.
