This year, it was our turn to host Bedfordshire Golf Captains, so, as ever generous hosts, we took them to one of Sussex's best courses, Cooden Beach. Although the day was overcast, the winds were light and the course was in great condition. The Bedfordshire Captains had spent the previous day playing at the Dyke before heading into Brighton for an evening of fun and games. Remember lads, what happens in Brighton stays in Brighton…
On paper, this should be an easy win, but in golf, there is no such thing! Could we put these gentlemen to bed? Would Jeeves's famous old restorative work on sore heads and dodgy tum-tums? How would the team respond to Richard's famous rallying cry, "Lads, if you can't beat a bunch of hungover pensioners, you should consider taking up bowls." be received?
Read on, dear reader, read on.
This was Martin's first outing with Sussex Golf Captains, he described it as 'a fantastic day' with 'fantastic company' (Inc Richard? Ed). He enjoyed playing with a brilliant bunch of fellas. Half
Match 2
Phil Williamson (Pres) and Nigel Wates v Syd Pniewski and Simon Ward (Pres)
The big match of the Presidents. Fresh from his very successful President's Day, Phil was in fine form. Syd and Simon smiled through gritted teeth. It was Phil's day. Won 6&5
Andy Plowright and Nigel Powell v Graham Freer and Paul Cook
A great game, played with excellent company. We enjoyed Graham, apart from his Eagle 2 on the 5th, and Paul's company. The reeds were high, but the rough was low and sadly (? Ed) there was no wind to defend the course. We got round in 4ish hours (How long do you usually take? Ed) Won 4&2
Peter Hawley and Andy Lamb v Malcolm Waters and John Trott
Excellent match with Malcolm and John, who kept touching the Sussex pair. Andy played some of his best golf, finishing 2 over gross. Peter helped by offering words of encouragement and not getting in the way. Won 5&4
Ian Wood and Peter Brookshaw v Dave Hawlins and Bryan Murnane
Great game with lots of ham and egging. Sussex went to the last one up, but sportingly lost the last for a half. Nice, friendly golf all afternoon. Half
Ian Potter and Kevin Elphick v Colin McFarland and John Monaghan
Colin and John kept the game even through 12 holes, especially John, who, with his 16 handicap, was outrunning Kevin. Kevin kept Sussex in it on the front nine. Ian stepped in on the back nine to win it on the 16th. Won 4&2
Tim Ingram and John Luke v Clive Bassindale and David McKears
It was a very tight match, Sussex were 2 up after 3, all square after 14, where Clive scored a hole in one. 6 halved holes in the middle. Very friendly atmosphere for John's maiden appearance. All Square
Steve Dillamore and Malcolm Holmes v Les Tucker and Dave McGarry
It is a truth universally acknowledged that if a match report entry is missing, the editor gets to make up any old rubbish. Sussex lost this game. They were completely outplayed by Bedfordshire, never winning a hole. In fact, Sussex were so woeful that Bedfordshire offered to let them play from the forward tees. Lost 7&6
So, there you have it… we put our opponents to bed. Another great day on a lovely course, with excellent food and company. One chap even managed a hole-in-one.
