Sussex Golf Captains

Peter Yeates

Peter Yeates RIP

Peter hosting the Bristow Tankards

Peter was Captain of Sussex Golf Captains in 2009 and our President in 2014. He was a great supporter of the captains and will be sorely missed.

I would like to share a couple of personal memories of Peter.

As the club captain at Eastbourne Downs, in the same year, Peter was the Captain of Captains; I was privileged to join him in hosting the only intercounty match he won. This was my first Captain's match; it was a riot. We didn't stop laughing all afternoon. Turns out Peter had that effect on a lot of people. With his quick wit, cheeky grin and bucketloads of charm, his company was always a delight. He is partly responsible for igniting my love of the captains.

I vividly remember his end-of-year speech at the Neville. There was this tall, angular man with his glasses halfway down his nose and a sheaf of papers in his left hand. He paced around, exuding energy and enjoyment as he recounted his various highlights as Captain. I doubt his speech was written on the waving papers, but they served as a fantastic prop, and he had us in stitches.

Sadly, Peter suffered a massive stroke on his President's Day, and his golf came to an end. His fondness for Sussex Captains never waned. Those of you who played in the mixed matches at Ham Manor will know that he always joined us for lunch. Even with his troubles, he still smiled and enjoyed a joke. Just look at his cheeky grin.

Peter was a wonderful man, a great Captain, and I am assured that in his youth, he was quite a good golfer.

RIP Peter

Funeral details will follow.
